dental implant procedure

Dental Implants
Dental implants can provide artificial teeth that look natural and feel secure. Dental implants can also be used to attach full or partial dentures. Implants, however, are not an option for everyone. Because implants require surgery, patients must be in good health, have healthy gums, have adequate bone to support the implant and be committed to meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits. If you are considering implants, a thorough evaluation by your dentist will help determine if you would be a good candidate.

complete and partial dentures

Complete & Partial Dentures

Our doctors have years of experience in fabricating both complete and partial dentures that will provide you with the fit, function and appearance your desire. We consider many factors including the condition of the tissues, the amount and condition of the bone structure, and the size and shape of your mouth. We use only the best ADA approved materials and the latest techniques. Usually four or five visits are required to custom fit your dentures to give you the best possible result. Follow up treatment is provided at no additional charge to insure your satisfaction.

In addition to traditional dentures, Dr. McFarland uses dental implants to stabilize both complete and partial dentures so that they can be snapped into place, making them seem much more like your natural teeth. Mini dental implants are an exciting addition to the options we can offer as these are placed in as little as one hour and can give you the secure confident smile you deserve. Call today for a consultation to see which treatment is the most appropirate for you.

dental veneers available at the dental care center of decatur

Dental Veneers

Doctors McFarland and Gobbel have been utilizing cosmetic veneers for years to create that incredible smile that covers those worn, chipped, or crooked teeth. Veneers are custom designed shells of porcelain that are bonded over your natural tooth to create a bright shapely smile. Regardless of what causes unattractive teeth, dental veneers may solve most of those cosmetic problems including, staining, wear, missalignment, and spacing. Veneers are placed in some situations where no drilling needs to be done. Other cases require the removal of some surface enamel prior to obtaining molds or impressions of the involved teeth. This will permanently alter the teeth so a careful diagnosis of your oral habits is required before treatment is recommended. If you are looking for a way to brighten your smile, veneers may be for you.

tooth colored fillings available at the dental care center of decatur

Tooth Colored Fillings

Resin based filling are custom made to the color of your natural teeth, creating a more natural appearance than an amalgam(silver) filling. These are placed when there is still natural tooth structure to help hold them in place and minimize the wear on the white filling material. They will last from 3-10 years depending on their size and the forces applied to them. The advantage to these resin based fillings is their natural appearance and the fact that they are completed in one visit.

dental inlays and overlays available at the dental care center of decatur

Porcelain Inlays/Onlays

This refers to a filling that is made from an impression or by an indirect method. Its purpose is to make the tooth stronger by holding it together by bonding to the natural tooth structure while having it's own pleasing esthetic tooth color.

These fillings are made from an impression and fabricated in a lab and therefore take two visits to complete. They are quite durable and can last from 10-20 years. While a conventional silver filling can make a tooth more prone to fracture, a bonded inlay or onlay can actually increase the tooth's strength by 75%. Their advantages are their pleasing esthetic value and their strength.

tissue grafting dental care center of decatur

Tissue Grafting

Recession of the gum line makes teeth look long and may cause sensitivity to hot and cold. By grafting tissue from the roof of your mouth to the site where the gum has receded, we are able to protect the exposed root. This can decrease the chance of decay, additional wear and minimize sensitivity. The causes of recession are varied from aggresive tooth brushing,to aging, to periodontal diesease. Following a clinical examination, Dr. McFarland can suggest the best course of treatment to deal with your individual situation and where grafts may be needed to control the loss of soft tissue.

ceramic crowns dental care center of decatur

Ceramic & Metal Crowns

There are many crowns available today and Dr. McFarland and Dr. Gobbel are able to provide you with the correct type of crown for your situation. All Ceramic crowns, porcelain fused to metal and full gold crowns all have their place and are prescribed to patients depending on their needs. A crown is used to replace missing or damaged tooth material when insufficient natural tooth structure remains. After the tooth is prepared and impressions taken for use in the dental lab, a temporary crown is placed until the return visit. This second appointment is made for two weeks after the first one and the pearmanent crown is then adjusted and cemented into place. All ceramic crowns are the preferred choice for teeth that are visible in a smile because they are designed to blend in against natural teeth. A well designed ceramic crown is visually indistinguishable from your natural teeth giving you the appearance of a healthy intact smile.

Crowns made with a metal substructure or porcelain fused to metal are often used in the back of the mouth for a combination of both strength and appearance. These crowns have the ability to withstand heavy pressure and still maintain a natural tooth appearance. When a tooth is missing and crowns are used to form a bridge, metal is usually incorporated into the framework for strength and rigidity. Today, gold crowns are used almost exclusively on posterior teeth, usually on people with a history of clenching or grinding their teeth. A properly fabricated gold crown can last for many years without fear of breakage.

root canals available at the dental care center of decatur

Root Canals

When the pulp or nerve of a tooth is damaged, the only alternative to root canal treatment is extraction of the tooth. Signs of damage to the pulp include: pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling and tenderness. Depending on the tooth involved, one to four canals in the root of the tooth will need to be treated. Many times the procedure can be completed in one appointment, but if infection is present, a second appointment may be necessary. When treated promptly at the first onset of symptoms, root canal treatment should not be painful. It is only when a severe infection is allowed to develop that an abcess forms causing significant discomfort.

fixed bridges available at the dental care center of decatur

Fixed Bridges

When one or more teeth are lost and sound natural teeth exist adjacent to that space, a fixed bridge can be placed to restore function in that part of the mouth. By joining teeth together so that they are placed as a unit when cemented, this allows for replacement of the missing tooth with something that is cemented onto your natural teeth and cannot be removed under normal function. These bridges can replace a single missing tooth or they can be used to restore an entire arch of teeth. All porcelain or porcelain with metal bridges can be fabricated depending on the span, height and condition of the natural teeth.
